Parallel Me used to be one semester. Now it is a whole life. You start with a 19-year-old student's phone, and chapter by chapter you decide what kind of life she builds: through college, out into the world, and all the way to the day she looks back on it. No two lives go the same way, because the story lines, the people and the turns of fate are drawn fresh every time. Here are five very different lives you might end up living.

A note before you start: the game's text is in Chinese. It is fiction, written for adults, and best enjoyed slowly.

## 1. The shopkeeper

In the sophomore spring she can buy a nail kit and open a little salon in her dorm, taking orders, setting prices and watching her rating. It is completely optional; there is always a goal that has nothing to do with the shop. But if you keep it going, junior year can turn it into the path "open my own shop", and after graduation the stage pool may offer Growing the Little Shop, then perhaps a chain. Or a partner falls out with her and she starts again. A life about one small business, and everything it costs and gives back.

## 2. The scholar

Some lives are built at a desk. Ace the first semester's final exam, take the grad-school path in junior year, then choose Grad School after graduation. Later stages can bring a mentor who opens doors, or a promotion that turns out to be harder than the research ever was. The scholar's life is about pacing: Mood keeps falling every time she studies, and a crash costs a whole week.

## 3. The one who follows her heart

Maybe the ex comes back in the first semester. Maybe it is the classmate who never says what he feels, or the singer from the livehouse. Love carries over between chapters: she might go into the next semester in a long-distance relationship, newly together, or single and open to something new. In junior year she can even follow him to his city. After graduation, A Serious Relationship might lead to He Proposed, or to a breakup. And every partner has a hidden nature, so the man she marries may stand by her through everything, or not.

## 4. The one who goes it alone

Fine on My Own is a real stage, and never marrying is a real ending. A life can be travel, a cat, a career she loves and friends who stay. In the six life lines, Love is only one of six. A single life with high Career and Peace of Mind can end with the line "never married, and loved the freedom", and that is not a consolation prize.

## 5. The one fate keeps testing

Not everything is chosen. Sometimes fate steps in: being laid off, an illness, an accident, trouble in the family. But the game also remembers when things go badly. After two bad turns in a row, a mentor, an old friend, a windfall or a comeback becomes far more likely to appear. A life that falls down several times can still end with a title like "fell many times" and something she built, and those are often the most moving documentaries.

## The ending of a whole life

When she reaches Looking Back, the game writes one short line for each of her six life lines, gives her a life title, and an AI writes a documentary of her whole life. You can save a life card, see how your life compares on the Parallel Lives Wall, and let friends leave her a note.

## Where to begin

If this is your first time, start a new life and do not plan too hard. Pick the goal that sounds like a semester you would have liked, choose the life stages that feel right for her, and let fate surprise you now and then. Then start again, and see who she becomes next time.
